Built for Freeze-Thaw
Calgary gets more than 100 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Water that gets under asphalt freezes, lifts the surface, and thaws into a void — which is how a hairline crack becomes a pothole in a single winter. Asphalt paving in Calgary is really a base-preparation job with an asphalt layer on top.
On every project Dan and John check the existing grade so water runs away from foundations and garage slabs, not toward them. Where the subgrade is soft clay, the base is excavated deeper and rebuilt with a granular base compacted to the right depth and density before any hot-mix goes down. Asphalt is placed at the right temperature and thickness for the load — thinner for a car driveway, thicker for a truck-loaded commercial lot — and compacted while it's still hot.
That's the part you can't see once the job is done, and it's the reason a driveway lasts 15 to 25 years instead of five.
